2023I can't believe this is the 8th time that I'm doing this, but here we are. In 2023 travel returned to normal almost everywhere and I managed to visit cities in Asia, Europe, North America, and even an island off the coast of South America.

In the Americas I visited Miami and Trinidad and Tobago while in Europe I visited Spain including Madrid as well as cities in the north, followed by Germanic lands of Germany and Austria. I ended the year back in the far east with a trip to China and finished in the Middle East with trips to Doha and Abu Dhabi. In the middle of it all I split my time roughly in half between Washington DC and the UK. 2022After two years of living in a pandemic, 2022 is when the world slowly started to re-open. It also meant that after a travel free 2021, my 7th edition of a yearly review has some interesting places.

I continued my European adventure with another trip to Amsterdam, followed by my second trip to Rome. In Italy, I also visited Florence, Pisa, and Parma. I hopped across the Irish sea to Dublin before I moved to Washington DC. While on the East Coast, I made a trip to New York, 6 years after living there, before switching to the West Coast and visiting San Francisco for the second time. I went back to South-East Asia when I finally visited Lao, stopping off in Vientiane, and then in Luang Prabang. A third trip to Bangkok followed, before a first ever visit to Kuwait. I finally made it to Greece with a visit to Athens, before I went back to the Middle East for my second visit to Dubai and ended the year in Mauritius. Yep, it has been a busy one, and I still don't know how this council estate boy has managed to grow up visiting so many places - but I am grateful. A never ending pandemic that continues to bring hardship to millions around the world either directly or indirectly. As always, I end the year with a look back at the previous year, the 6th time I've done this.

This was the first time since I started this blog that I didn't make a single trip out of the country, for obvious reasons, but I opened my Travel Shop. The furthest I went was the Jurassic Coast. I spent most of my time in the Midlands visiting the West Midlands Safari Park, Bridgnorth, different Gurdwaras in the area, and the Black Country. I also finally waved goodbye to London after almost 7 years in the city, and covered my favourite London Museums. The summer of 2021 brought us the delayed Euro 2020 and I wrote about my experiences of attending the final between England and Italy. For obvious reasons, trips abroad this year were limited, although I did make it out to Nigeria, Kenya, Serbia and France earlier this year when the virus was limited largely in China. When lockdown was lifted, it was a chance to explore my own backyard, so I took trips to the different Royal Parks in London, as well as a first visit to the White Cliffs of Dover. I spent a considerable bit longer around the Midlands, doing a charity climb to Snowden, as well as exploring Birmingham and Stratford-upon-Avon. It's the end of another year, and just as I have done before, it's time for another end of year review looking back at all the trips I've taken over the past 12 months.

I took the least amount of time outside the country since starting this blog in 2015. I began the year with a short trip to Lisbon for a friends' stag do. My next trip was a return to Paris after 2 years (and I ended up going twice this year). My longest trip of the year took me to Seoul, and then a personal highlight when I finally managed to go to Hong Kong, a city I've wanted to see for years. I had another stag do in a random place as I crossed the Irish Sea to Belfast, before a short trip to Brussels (and that second visit to Paris) ended my year. For the first time, I didn't do an extended trip, but instead took a large number of smaller trips to cities in Europe, Asia and North America. I kicked off the year in Italy, visiting Rome (including a quick stop in the Vatican), Naples, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast. I then went to Asia where I returned to Singapore after 5 years. I then experienced a personal highlight exploring Kuala Lumpur and the nearby Batu Caves. It was back to Europe as I visited Vienna, Frankfurt and Zurich in quick succession. I then had a change of pace as I climbed the 'Rock' during my time in Gibraltar. I finally got to visit a city I've wanted to see for a long time when I made the trip to Berlin. As summer turned to autumn I returned to Amsterdam before ending the year with short trips to New York and Edinburgh. 2017 was a lot more settled as I spent most of my year living and working in New York and the rest of the year in London. My first impressions of New York laid the foundation for an amazing time in the city that never sleeps from visiting all the famous pizzerias, to discovering all the best museums NYC has to offer. You can't visit New York without seeing all the famous skyscrapers which I made sure to do. I managed to really experience American culture by attending at least one game of every major American sport and even got to see their 4th of July celebrations. A trip out to Long Island gave me a different taste of Americana, something a lot more laid back. While I was out in the United States, I visited Washington DC on a couple of occasions, managing to see a fair amount of America's capital city. I took a trip out to the midwest and spent some time in Chicago visiting some of the famous landmarks and tasting the famous Chicago style deep dish pizza. I also caught up with friends I had met in Cambodia as they showed me around Florida with a trip to Miami during Spring Break. Perhaps my favourite city that I visited in the US was San Francisco, I spent almost a week seeing different areas, including a trip across the famous Golden Gate Bridge. My second half of the year was significantly quieter as I transitioned back to life in England. That being said I made a very short trip to Luxembourg, visiting Luxembourg City, the beautiful town of Vianden, and a train ride across the border into Germany to visit the oldest continuously habited city in the country, Trier. As with the post last year, just click the blue links to read about any of the locations in depth. 2016Globally its been a strange year. The Syrian Civil War entered into its fourth and bloodiest year, yet in the West we were obsessed with the deaths of celebrities. As spring turned to summer, the UK voted to leave the EU in the biggest political decision of my lifetime. In any other year, that would be the biggest newstory, but 2016 outdid itself in the autumn when the US elected Donald Trump as its leader. President Donald Trump, I still can't say it with a straight face.
I began the year by taking a trip to Madrid with my friend to visit an old flatmate. We stayed in his house (more like an mansion) just outside of the city and he showed us around the city and the trip was topped off with a game at the Bernabeu, a stadium that had been on my 'must see' list for a long time. I then took two trips to Valencia, both stag parties with different groups of friends and completely different experiences. I stayed in the beautiful old town of Valencia during my first stay (in an apartment with the most incredible view), and stayed in a more modern part of the city near the beach a few weeks later. Sandwiched in the middle of my trips was another stag party with yet another group of friends, this time to Prague. I took an extended trip to South America, travelling along the Pacific Coast all the way across to the Atlantic. I began in Peru where I visited a number of cities and did a 3 day climb to Machu Picchu. After a run in with the police, I went to the salt flats in Bolivia via La Paz, followed by an almost 18 hour bus journey to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. After visiting a friend in Santiago I finished my trip with almost a week in Rio. After this I attended a summer school in Spain at the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics and ended the year with a Christmas trip to Paris to catch up with some friends. The year saw me visit 2 of the 7 Wonders of the World. Not bad considering I hadnt been abroad till my early twenties when I could finally afford to pay for holidays. Here are a collection of my favourite pictures I took this year (click on any of the blue links to read my in depth posts on each location).. |
